Our Successes and Awards
Throughout our journey, we've done so much to spread the word about our project. We have gathered contacts from outside of our home state and out of the country. A 7th-grade class is currently building one of out traps in the U.S. Virgin Islands. We've been to many events in order to educate the public and bring to attention the need for our product. We have also been recognized with awards from competitions we have entered for the work that we do.
eCYBERMISSION
eCYBERMISSION is an internationally recognized competition where you compete against other teams worldwide. One team from every region gets selected to continue onto the finals and go to Washington D.C for the final round. Even if you don't make it that far, you can at least make it to 1st place or 2nd place in your state. Sadly, we did not make it to the finals, but we did win 2nd place in the state of NJ.
STEAM Tank
The STEAM Tank Challenge, created and sponsored by NJSBA and the U.S. Army, encourages students in the areas of STEAM – science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. The highly successful program pits student teams in a contest modeled after the “Shark Tank” television show. Teams create innovative projects and present their inventions before a judging panel of entrepreneurs, business leaders and inventors. On May 13 we went to NJIT in Newark, New Jersey in order to compete in the K-8 STEAM Tank Challenge for the Northern Region. After giving a presentation to the judges and showing our prototypes we waited for the rest of the projects to be presented. When the judging had ended, we found that we were going to the next round. The finals are going to be held on October 24th and 25th in Atlantic City, New Jersey during the Workshop 2017 conference at the Atlantic City Convention Center so we are very excited.
Presidential Environmental Youth Award
The President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) recognizes outstanding environmental projects by K-12 youth. The PEYA program promotes awareness of our nation's natural resources and encourages positive community involvement. On May 19th, we had the privilege to go to New York, New York to receive the PEYA from the EPA. There are 9 regions and we had won from Region 2. We met amazing people who had also won other awards. We received a plaque and gained contacts from our region. For the next ceremony, we will be going to Washington D.C. to the White House Rose Garden in August.
Paradigm Challenge
We were finalists for the Paradigm Challenge. The Paradigm Challenge is a nationally recognized competition that inspires the younger generation to use STEM skills make a difference. The challenge was to generate original ideas to help with waste reduction.
